Wooot Wednesday

In Class:
We watched a movie about all different kinds of animals and how they survive in their surroundings. We wrote down 20 facts, thoughts, or questions about the movie and handed it in.

Facts from the movie:
  • Antarctica can reach temperatures of 40 below
  • the seal is the only animal that can live there permanently
  • seals keep warm by generating heat within the body, while the fur keeps it trapped inside
  • the flies can drain a pint of blood per day, in order to avoid these flies, reindeer go to higher grounds
  • fruit bats live in the congo, their wings are one meter across
  • 10 million fruit bats fly hundreds of kilometers to a huge swamp with a large supply of mangos
  • the ice that the polar bears live and hunt is melting, causing many problems for the species

DNA
  • double helix structure

  • made up of sugar, phosphate group, nitrogenous base
Four Types of Bases:
Adenine (A)
Cytosine (C)
Thymine (T)
Guanine (G)

PURINES:
  • Two rings
  • (G) (A)
PYRIMIDINES:
  • One ring

Base Pairing: Only (A) pairs with together with a (T) while every (C) pairs together with a (G)

DNA REPLICATION
  • takes place during S-phase of interphase
  • 2 copies of DNA needed for mitosis
  • PROKARYOTES: one replication fork
  • EUKARYOTES: more than one replication fork
  • Histones: proteins which DNA is wrapped around
DNA VS. RNA

DNA:
  • deoxyribose
  • thymine
  • molecules stay in nucleus
  • double stranded
RNA:
  • ribose
  • uracil
  • molecules travel through cytoplasm
  • single stranded
  • three types (messenger, ribosomal, transfer)

Transcription:
  • one strand of DNA serves as template for making RNA
  • occurs in nucleus
Translation:

  • mRNA attaches to a ribosome
  • each tRNA carries one amino acid
  • anticodon = on tRNA
  • codon = on mRNA
  • amino acids bond together forming a polypeptide chain
  • long polypeptide chains make a protein
MUTATIONS
  • can be beneficial or harmful
  • may lead to cancer or genetic disorders
  • may result in a new positive trai
types of mutations:
deletion, duplication, inversion, translocation

Monday,FUN-DAYY!!

Today in class we turned in our 6 questions for section 1.1. This was the homework assigned last Friday.


For tonight, our homework is to read the appendix on pages A-14 and A-15 and look at the virtual microscope. Also, a write up for the Rip-O-Meter lab that we are currently working on is due on September 10th. Pages 31 and 32 are good sources to help you get started with your lab write up.

During class we first finished up our pre lab questions and turned those in. After completing the pre lab, we then went on to start the Rip-O-Meter lab. My group decided that we were going to test out what would happen if we used different size leaves. We pierced our leaves at the point where all the veins came together because we agreed that would be the strongest part of the leaf. We also talked about making sure we place the pennies in slowly every time because the experiment wouldn't be controlled if we were throwing pennies in one trial and gently placing them in the next. Most groups just finished the testing part of the lab when class ended.

Also, bring in your lab books and goggles to class this week. We will be using the lab books in class next week.
