LATE ARRIVAL WOOOOOOOO!

-Enzyme Reading / Chart - Thursday

We started off class by handing in our flow chart and picked up 5 papers which were the Enzyme Reading and chart and 3 diagrams. After we did our notes and we were given a chance at the end of class. Mrs. Stein also attempted to show us what the enzyme rennin does to milk, but was unable.
DIGESTION
-Breaks down large molecules into smaller molecules which can be used by cells
-Physical / Chemical digestion
-Alimentary canal is a one way tube which food passes through the body
-Accessory structures do not carry food, but aid in digestion

MOUTH
-Mechanical digestion (Teeth crushes food)
-Saliva moistens food and contains salivary amylase
-Starch into simpler sugars
ESOPHAGUS
-Muscular - connects pharynx and stomach
-Peristalsis
-Waves of muscle contraction
-Bolus enters the stomach through a sphincter
STOMACH
-Muscular sac lined with mucus
-Protection + lubrication -> Protects from burning the stomach
-Mechanical digestion
-Chemical digestion
-HCI kills bacteria, lower pH to activate pepsin
-Proteins break down
-Peptic ulcer - hole in stomach wall caused by bacteria
SMALL INTESTINE
-Duodenum - 1st part of the small intestine
-Enzymes and fluids here
-Carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins digested here
-Nutrients absorbed
-Lined with finger-like protections called villi
-Increases SURFACE AREA of absorption
-Water, cellulose, and indigestible remain
ACCESSORY STRUCTURES
-Liver produces bile which emulsifies (breaking a part for larger SURFACE AREA) fat
-Gallbladder stores bile
-Pancreas produces enzymes
LARGE INTESTINE
-Absorbs water from undigested material
-Bacteria synthesizes from vitamin K

WHY DO WE HAVE SEX?! : TO INCREASE GENETIC VARIATION AND INCREASE THE CHANCE OF SURVIVAL OF SPECIES!
Two types of reproduction: Asexual and sexual.
-Asexual - One parent, offspring alone. (Bacteria, plants, amoebas, and simple organisms)
-Sexual - Joining of gametes increasing variation

Male Secondary Sex Characteristics: FHS stimulates testes to produce testosterone.
-Testosterone causes larynx wider (deeper voice), broader shoulders, facial hair, pubic hair, and muscle growth.

Female Secondary Sex Characteristics: FHS stimulates ovaries to produce estrogen.
-Estrogen causes wider hips for child delivery, breasts, pubic hair.

Terms:

Pituitary Gland - Secretes hormones and regulates other endocrine glands
Hypothalamus - Integrates the endocrine and nervous system as well as controlling the pituitary gland

Endocrine system regulates by a feedback mechanism: Positive and Negative.
Positive: When hormones are low, hypothalamus signals the pituitary to secrete more hormones
Negative: When hormones are high, production of hormones come to halt

FSH (Follicle-Stimulating Hormone): Stimulates production of mature eggs in ovaries.
LH (Luteinizing hormone): Stimulates ovaries and prepares for implantation of fertilized egg.
Check chapter 34.2 in your textbook which starts on page 982.

Zygote: Fertilized egg
Cleavage: Creates a cleave when cells are dividing
Chorion: Develops into a placenta
Amnion: Develops to amniotic sac which cushions the fetus
Gastrulation: Formation of 3 embryonic germ layer
-Endoderm - lining of digestive, reproductive, and respiratory systems
-Mesoderm - muscles, blood, and bones
-Ectoderm - skin and nervous system

Placenta and umbilical cord connect the fetus to mother
-Provides energy and oxygen and removes waste and carbon dioxide
Amniotic sac cushions the fetus

Contraception is preventing the union of egg and sperm
Forms of contraception:
-Abstinence (Safest way to prevent pregnancy)
-Condom
-Birth Control Pills
-Tubal Ligation (Woman's tube gets tied)
-Vasectomy (Cuts vas deferens where sperm travels)

DON'T YOU JUST LOVE MONDAYS?

Before I start my fantastical blog, I would like to apologize for this late blog post.

We started off class by handing in our homework and we moved onto finish our notes. Mrs. Stein has lost her voice so I hope she's a bit better now. We finished up our Immune System tree map.


IMMUNE SYSTEM DISORDERS
ALLERGIES
-Overreaction of the immune system
-Mast cells produce HISTAMINES (Chemicals which increase blood flow and fluid production [mucus, tears, etc.]).
-Signals inflammation

AUTOIMMUNE DISORDER
-Immune system mistakenly attacks its own cells
-Type 1 diabetes rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis

IMMUNODEFICIENCY DISEASE

-AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome) was 1st observed in the late 1970's
-AIDS is caused by HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus)
-Why is HIV so problematic?
-It evades the defenses of the immune system
-It destroys helper T-cells

HIV VIRUS - RNA VIRUS
-Uses DNA as the templates to form DNA
-These viruses are called RETROVIRUSES
-Transmission
-Blood and body fluids
-Detection of HIV - Presence of HIV Antibodies
-Effects on the body
-Helper T-cells cannot activate B-cells and T-cells
-Can't fight of disease

WOOOOOOO NEW UNIT!


AGENDA:
1) GRADES/ATTENDANCE/STAR AND WISH
2) NEW UNIT (CELLS + CANCER)
3) REVIEW MICROSCOPE

We started off Biology today by getting back our grade reports. We also received our new unit packet on Cell Theory and Cancer and a new agenda. After that, we briefly discussed our new unit. We then collaborated a small list of ideas/words that we can remember/relate to our new unit.

Here is the list that we came up with:
CELLS:
-BASIC UNIT STRUCTURE OF ORGANISMS
-
Organelle (cell parts) have different jobs
-ALL LIVING THINGS HAVE CELLS (BUILDING BLOCKS OF LIFE)
-Phases of mitosis
-Specialization -> Cells do different things and there are different types of cells
-Cell divide/reproduce -> Cells come from cells
-Types of cells -> animal/plant etc.
-Nucleus (Contains DNA)
-Cytoplasm
-Cell membrane
-Golgi Bodies-Nucleolus
-Ribosomes
-Mitochondria
-Chlorophyll/Chloroplast
-Lysosomes
-Vacuole

Not so bad eh?

After we did our mini collaboration, we took notes on the new unit.
LEVELS OF ORGANIZATION
CELL THEORY:
-All living things are composed of cells
-Cells are the basic unit of all living things

CELL SPECIALIZATION:
-Cells develop in different ways to perform different tasks
-Complex organisms have more specialized cells
-Structure determines function

After our note taking, we went on to review how to use a microscope with a partner. We will be having a mini microscope test tomorrow to test your knowledge on how to use a microscope. If you REALLY REALLY aren't confident going tomorrow, talk to Mrs.Stein to postpone your testing on Friday. You will have 45 seconds to get the specimen in focus on high powered objective.

TEST TUESDAY

AGENDA: TEST

Today we finally had our Ecology Test. All we did throughout the period was to take our test. I hope everybody did well.

Our homework for today was:

1) READ SECTION 7.1 (Which is located on page 190 on our Biology text book)
2) Double Bubble Map on Eukaryotes and Prokaryotes which is found on page 193 on our Biology text book.
