Blizzard Tuesday
(February 2, 2011)

Homework:
  1. Read Chapter 19 no strategy needed
  2. Finish lab 38
  3. Due Flow map on 19.3
Notes:
We took notes on Tuesday and here are my notes:
  • Homologous structures-the organisms don't have to use the structure the same way but the structure looks very similar. One way I remember what Homologous structure is the start to homologous-homo which means similar or same
  • Analogous structures-same function but different structure ,but if put in the same environment natural selection would probably make the structure the same. My hint for this is Analogous structure reminds me of the word analogies and an analogy is like an Analogous structure.
  • Vestigial structures-structures that exist in an organisms but serve no purpose.
  • Comparative Embryology- a comparison between embryos. My clue to remember this is Embryology contains embryo and that what it involves.
  • Molecular biology-finds similarities in amino acids and DNA and RNA
On Tuesday we went over the notes above and then we started the lab that we have for homework.

RNA and DNA Tuesday

Agenda:
  1. We checked in our Double Bubble maps
  2. We discussed our Maps
  3. Talked about the different types of RNA
  4. Went to Math lab to log into our online book
The double bubble map was between the DNA and RNA . DNA and RNA are similar in the following ways: They both have long chains of Nucleotides, form using a replication fork, made up of nucleotides, sugar, nitrogen base, and phosphate, form using enzymes, are nucleic acid, and have Cytosine, Adenine, and Guanine. Things that are DNA only are the sugar is Deoxyribose, has Thymine, Double stranded, stays in the Nucleus, contains the code for protein, and uses DNA polymerase as the enzyme to form. Things specific to RNA are the sugar is ribose, is single stranded, has Uracil instead of Thymine, is found in the nucleus and cytoplasm, plays a major role in protein synthesis, and has three type of it Messenger RNA (mRNA), Transfer RNA (tRNA), and Ribosomal RNA (rRNA).
After we went over the Double bubble map we talked about the different type of RNA: rRNA, mRNA, and tRNA.
  • rRNA (Ribosomal RNA) makes up most of ribosomes and carries instructions for making Ribosomes. rRNA is found in the Nucleolus and finally Ribosomes are very special because they are found in primitive cells so it is believed that they are one of the oldest organelles and are prehistoric.
  • mRNA (Messenger RNA) carries the DNA information from the DNA in the Nucleus to the ribosome and has the amino acids put on it to form a polypeptide.
  • tRNA (Transfer RNA) carries the amino acids one by one to the ribosome where it is put on the mRNA mixing it with the step before to make a polypeptide
Some other information Mrs. Stein gave us to better understand this is: an amino acid are the building blocks of protein when you link amino acids together you get a polypeptide. A polypeptide is a group of amino acids linked together. A polypeptide can also be called a baby protein because when it matures it forms Protein.

Homework:
  1. Flow map on protein synthesis due Tomorrow hint: Starts which RNA synthesis on 13.1 and goes into 13.2 highly recommended you go to the online book and watch the animations and play the game
  2. Test and Paper due November 23

Environmental Issue Day

Summary
Today we started class by taking some notes on Globlal Warming and then moved on to the computer lab to watch our videos.

Greenhouse Gases
First we started our notes on greenhouse gases and how it affects Earth's temperature. Mrs. Stein explained greenhouse gases as a natural lightweight blanket around Earth that keeps it warm. This blanket is vital to human survival because it keeps Earth warm by holding in the Sun's heat. This blanked was turned into a comforter, a thicker blanket, y humnans and other animals. Humans help make this blanket thicker by burning oil into the atmosphere. We also contibute by burning forest, but when a wildfire burns trees the same affect happens. That contributes to the carbon dioxide part of the greenhouse gases but there is another part methane gas. Methane gas is produced by cows and humans eat meat and use cows for other things. All of the cows on Earth account for a large part of the greenhouse gases on Earth.


You may say so why does it matter that there is so many greenhouse gases in our atmosphere. The answer is global warming by making this light blanket a comforter more heat is retained on planet Earth. This heat is changing the climate of places on Earth. This heat is also melting the glaciers and ice caps in the North and South Pole. This water is causing the water levels to rise giving humans and other land animals even less room on Earth. Overpoppulation is already a problem but this in the future could make it even worse because humans will have even less room to expand. This climate change is effecting biodiversity as well some animals do not adapt well to climate change like the polar bear who now has less room to hunt and is becoming thinner and is threaten the species.

Ozone Layer
Ozone is not greenhouse gases. The ozone is a molecule made of three atoms of oxygen. If the greenhouse gases are a blanket then the ozone layer is sunscreen. The ozone protects humans as well as other animals from ultraviolet rays (UV rays). UV rays can effect DNA of animals. CFC's were the cause of the decay of the Ozone layer. Since the banning of CFC's the Ozone has recovered tremondously.

The End of Class
The last part of class we went to the math lab. In the math lab we watched each others videos and went onto the forum and answered the two questions if we had time. This was Friday's biology class.
