Terrific Tuesday!!

Todays Agenda:
  • Go over Kidney lab
  • DISECT KIDNEY!!!
In the beginning we started by going over the kidney lab and what we were supposed to do. We also went over safety instructions:
  • no rough housing
  • wear gloves
  • wear safety goggles
As soon as we were done with that we went to our lab bench and got our kidneys.

Our first instructions were to observe the kidney and start answering questions about it located on pages 23-28 in your unit packet. And then, the best
part, we cut the kidneys in half to get a better view. We observed our kidneys and located where all of the important structers where such as the:
  • Renal cortex
  • Renal pelvis
  • Renal pyramid
  • Renal medulla
  • Ureter
After we were all able to locate where those were on the kidney by ourselves Mrs. Stein came over and quizzed us just to make sure.

After we were done, we all made sure that we cleaned up our lab bench!

Quiz and Bio Days

Thursday
We handed in UP 67-71 and then took a quiz. The quiz lasted thirty minutes so if you were not here this day then you still have to take it. After we finished our quiz we had to pick a disease from the fallowing that we had either never herd of or were particularly interested in;
- Cystic Fibrosis - Marfan's Syndrome - Sickle Cell Disease
- Huntington's Disease
- Hemophilia
- Hemochromatosis
- Tay- Sachs
- Fragile X
- Duchenne's Muscular Dystrophy
- Neurofibromatosis
- Down Syndrome
- PKU
(also found on page seven in our unit packet)

After we had picked our disease then we went to the web sight above and looked up our disease and answered the questions on pages seven and eight. The first link is the most helpful of them all.

Friday
Today we met in the lyceum for bio day. The movie we watched was called "Dogs". It was about how dogs descended from wolfs. It was a big mystery for a very long time. They finally had an idea where there were some breeders that only took the two calmest dogs and breeding thus driving the gene for being calm into there genetic material, creating dogs. They figured out they did this for many different things for instance they thought for creating some dogs that can run really fast in the old days only feeding the dogs that would catch food so they developed to becoming the fastest dogs yet. That was how they believed all of the different breeds of dogs came to be.

It's Monday Again!

Handouts
The number one thing we had to do was to hand in our alien posters, so if you didn't finish yet make sure you get them in by tomorrow. We also got a lot of things back. Including, a little sheet of paper that had a bunch of different ways to study, our grade sheets, our leaf right up, or lab 58, our notes, and our stamp sheets.

The Big Test Tomorrow
We spent a lot of the day reviewing things for the test, asking Mrs. Stein any questions we had, and making sure we knew everything. There is a study guide located on pages 1 and 2 of our pink packets.

Chapter 3-The Biosphere
Basically the main things we need to know are the ecological terms;
Ecology
Biosphere
Species
Population
Community
Ecosystem
Biosphere
We also need to know how to label a food chain/web, know what percentage of heat is lost as it continues on to the next organism, the effects of an alien species, be able to explain what oil spills effect.

Chapter 4- Ecosystems and Communities
What are biotic and abiotic factors and how do they influence the ecosystem, what do these do to communities;
Competition
Predation
Symbiosis
Mutualism
Commensalism
Parasitism
be able to explain succession, define biome and recognize the ten we talked located in the unit packet.

Chapter 5-Humans in the Biosphere
List the characteristics of a population, identify current threats to biodiversity, and identify factors that limit population growth

Chapter 6-Humans in the biodiversity
What is biodiversity and what is its value, what are current threats to biodiversity, what is the concern of Global warming and how did it happen, what are the causes, effects and possible solutions to
Biological magnification
DDT
ozone layer depletion
CFC's acid rain
Pollution
And, research the local issue of deer overpopulation.

Ways to Study
Some helpful ways to study are to look through the textbook, use the study guide, be able to explain all of this stuff to someone your having a conversation with, and use the little white sheet of paper, look at your notes, go to the review session in room 374 at 7:00 am. tomorrow. On the little white sheet of paper is a way to get you to a website that will help you study that also includes a mini game of jeopardy. There are two ways to get to the home page; one way is to go to the gbs homepage, click on departments, science, biology, STS biology 163, review. Another way is to type in http://gbhweb.glenbrook225.org/gbs/science/stsbio/revsheet.htm the user name is dst225\biology and the password is gotitans. Make sure you study and the test will be easy. Just remember don't tell anybody about what is on the test, a few questions people might ask are, How was the test? It was fine just make sure you studied. What was on the test? I don't remember, or the stuff that was on the quiz.

Homework
Tuesday
Test

Wednesday
