Marvelous Monday!

4/11/11
Agenda:
-Take out nutrient lab and UP 19-20 with stamp sheet
-Post lab nutrient lab
-Begin excretion!!!!!
-Video

Hello everyone! Welcome back to school after a fantabulastic weekend! Hope you had fun.

First today, Mrs. Stein stamped our stamp sheets for the nutrient lab, and UP 19-20. You were supposed to get 2 cow stamps. If you didn't, then well then.....
Next, we discussed the nutrient lab. It wasn't the easiest lab, but as we went over the results, I found it easier to comprehend.
After that, we started.........
EXCRETION!!!!! 
Excretion- get rid of/ removal
The organs involved in the excretion are:
~skin, lungs, liver, kidneys
The kidneys help release urine, the lungs release carbon dioxide, and the skin releases sweat.
The parts of the kidney are:
-Nephron
~Bowman's Capsule
+Loop of Henle
Bladder, ureter, and urethra are also parts of the excretory system.
URINE/SWEAT:
-Water
-Salt
-Uric acid/urea
~Nitrogenous waste
How does the excretory system play a role in homeostasis?
-Removes LIQUID wastes
-Regulates pH level in the blood. (Removes certain ions from blood.)
-REGULATES WATER CONTENT OF BLOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

After that.....
We watched a video about a man and his daughter, and the man ran out of water. That wasn't the point of the video, but it was funny. The video started to explain the excretory system, and how big of an impact water loss has on the human body.

Back from Break!

Homework:
Pages 5-8 in the UP
At some point read section 28.3 in your books!

Happy New Year everyone! I hope your break was fantastic. Today, in biology, we started our new unit, reproduction. There was the unit packet, and the unit calendar at the front of the room today which we were supposed to grab. First in class today, we discussed what we did on break and how break went for everyone. After that, we got our grade reports handed back. Then, Mrs. Stein started explaining what the unit was about and what we were going to be learning in the unit like she does before we start every unit.

We later took notes on reproduction today. 
Here are the notes in case you missed them.
 
REPRODUCTION IN ANIMALS
-Important to the survival of a species. (It is actually vital for the species.)
- May increase genetic variation
-2 types of reproduction:
~Asexual-one parent, offspring are clones
-Bacteria, plants, amoebas, and simple organisms are a few examples
~Sexual-joining of gametes increases variation
-Some plants, many animals to name a couple.
One thing you must know is that FERTILIZATION IS THE JOINING OF AN EGG CELL AND A SPERM CELL

La Clase de Biologia ;)

Hand in UP 7-14
Review
Genome Movie

Today in biology, we first handed in UP 7-14 (which was the homework...). The pages were coloring in DNA, and the process in which DNA replicates. The homework was also to finish the questions on the back of those worksheets, and to finish the lab.

Later, we took review notes on DNA and Chromosomes. Let me refresh you on some things.

DNA stands for Deoxyribonucleic Acid.
Nucleotides are the building blocks/ subunits of DNA
~Made of;
-Sugar [deoxyribose]
-Nitrogen Base
-Phosphate Group
Nitrogen Bases:
~Purines-- have 2 rings
-Guanine and Adenine
~Pyrimidines-- have 1 ring
-Thymine and Cytosine
Base Pairing:
-Adenine-Thymine
-Guanine-Cytosine

ATCCGTACGGGCAAATT
^ORDER CODES TO MAKE PROTEINS!!!!!

Okay now that we're done with the review... let's go to today's notes!

DNA Replication:
-Replicates during S phase of Interphase
***MITOSIS REQUIRES 2 STRANDS OF GENETIC MATERIAL!!!***
-Each strand serves as a template for the new strand
-Results in 2 identical DNA molecules
-SEMI-CONSERVATIVE REPLICATION- each new molecule contains 1 old strand, and 1 new strand.

First Friday of Bio!

Today in biology, we showed Mrs. Stein our homework, and got a second stamp for completion. After that, we went over the homework, which were Simpsons themed worksheets. During that, we reviewed what independent and dependent variables, and control groups are. Mrs. Stein told us a secret on how to remember what the independent and dependent variables were. She said that the independent variables were the data that you are trying to figure out, (independent, I am trying to figure out), and the dependent variables are the data that you’re collecting. (Dependent, Data). After that, we started a lab with leaves. We wrote our own hypotheses and questions to the lab. It was a great way to end the week in Bio.
