3/15 Tuesday

Agenda:
-Plant of the day
-Photosynthesis review
-Photosynthesis Quiz
-Work on homework

Today in Biology, it was a simple day. We first reviewed the plant of the, which was a moss ball. Remember, it is no moss. It forms in specific lakes in Japan, Iceland, Scotland, and Estonia. They're not plants, they're algae. Moss balls are adapted to low light. Chloroplats are dormant unless the ball breaks apart.
Next, we reviewed photosynthesis, light reactions and everything we needed to know for our quiz.
After, the quiz Mrs. Stein gave us time to complete our homework.
Homework:
-Read 23.2 (669-671) and (674-677) w/ a Double Bubble Map "Root vs. Stem"
-National Park Project due 3/23

T4 Tuesday

Agenda:
1. Take out UP 6-9 w/ stamp sheet
2. Star/wish
3. Go over lab (6-9)
4. Notes- viruses
5. Video: Viruses

Today in class, the first thing we did was we took out our homework so that Mrs. Stein could check to make sure we completed the lab, 6-9.

Next we gave our star and our wish to our last scribe, Aleko.

Next we went over our lab from yesterday, UP 6-9. In "Whom Infected Whom?" The lab groups were all teams of epidemiologists and had to find out who first got the disease and who spread it to others. In most groups, Mr. Paek was the one who had the disease in the first case. Then it got to Ed, who showed no symptoms but infected others. S, Ed was the carrier of the disease.

Then, we took notes on viruses. Lets remember that there are three different kinds of viruses.











-This is a bacteriophage.
This is a tobacco mosaic virus-




-And this is an influenza virus. Which is similar to HIV


This picture is a picture of the lysogenic cycle. In this cycle, the viruses DNA attacks the prokaryotic cells chromosomes. When they split, they have made two virus infected cells.








-This is the cycle of the lytic cycle. Where a bacteriophage lands on a prokaryotic cell and uses its DNA to copy itself.












We also talked about viral diseases. We talked about how viruses attack and destroy cells and how it disrupts homeostasis. And then we talked about common viral diseases: influenza, the cold, HIV, chicken or small pox, warts, and the West Nile.
Finally we finished class with the video on viruses. This went over what we talked about in class a little more in depth.

Happy Monday!

Agenda:
1. TLC Visitor

3. Notes: Symbiosis, Growth Curves
4. Begin UP 35-41 Graphs

Today at the beginning of class, we had a visitor from the TLC come visit us. He's the one you can go to if you need help in Biology. He deeply encouraged us to get to the TLC as soon as we have trouble. Not only does he have a degree in Biology, he says the student tutors are even more helpful because they have taken this course before. They know what it's like to be in this class. Get in there today!

Next we gave our stars and our wishes to our last scribe, Josh.

Then we took notes on what we read about last night. The big study was about symbiosis and growth curves.
1. Symbiosis- organisms living together. "Sym" means together, and we know "bio" means life. So that's how we get the name, symbiosis.
2. Niche- physical and biological conditions of an organism.
- Role in food chain
- Where the organism lives.
3. Factors affecting population growth:
-Births/ deaths
-Immigration/ emigration
4. Population Density- number of individuals per unit area.

For the graphs we learned about two types of graphs, exponential and logistic graph.
1. The first graph was a exponential growth graph. Or a J-shape. This graph shows growth under ideal, or perfect, conditions. It shows a rapid increase in population.

2. The other graph is a logistic graph. Or a S-shape. In this one, growth stops or slows after a period of rapid growth.

- Carrying capacity is the number of individuals an evironment can support.
- Popultion levels off

The rest of class we worked on our homework which was in the UP 35-41.

- BLUE Anticipation Guide on 5.1 and 5.2 due Wednesday
